Lily Brown, Brighton based photographer, has been on our radar for quite sometime and we were VERY fortunate to design and build version 2 of Lily & Kierans By The Level website. Now on version 3, go check it out here. Lily arms herself with her manual film camera and a polaroid. We love her work for her choice of models, streetwear style and soft colours that are so recognisably hers. We’ve been following closely her collaboration with our dear friend Georgia (House of Bricks) as they work together on the HOB lookbooks. Great things will happen for Lily, (as well as pure talent, she also works incredibly hard and has a meticulous eye for detail) we caught up with her and asked her some questions for you all.

Please describe your photographic style for those unfamiliar with your work?

I try to keep my images honest and true to how you see it. I prefer capturing people in natural situations and not styled to far from their personal style so they’re comfortable and images come across natural. Shooting in film I think helps to give that raw aesthetic as well.

We’re big fan of the House of Bricks lookbooks! How do you and Georgia (founder of HoB) collaborate and come up with the concepts/locations? Explain your process.

Thanks! I love working with Georgia, I feel like we really bounce well off each other and get excited by the same things (pink haha) Usually Georgia has some idea of the direction she wants to go in, while trying to bring something different from the previous lookbooks and then we just throw ideas back and forth. We have a Pintrest board going for inspiration and location ideas around Brighton! Once the model and locations are sorted we just go with the flow. The latest one has to be one of my favourites though!! It was so much fun hunting for colourful houses and I love how it ties in with her brand name, House of Bricks. We were lucky to have had such beautiful weather for the shoot and Jess was a dream to work with. She also has the longest legs so me an Georgia looked like her little dwarfs haha.

We’re also fans of your travel photography, where in the world is your dream location to shoot?

Oh man I wish I could do more of it!! Probably LA, I’ve been dying to get out there for years, the colours and palm trees get me so excited haha. I’m planning a road trip from Texas to California next year, Yosemite and UTAH look amazing!

By The Level is a partnership with Kieran Sills, can you talk about it’s conception and your guys work process?

Yeah it’s changed a lot since we first started the blog nearly three years ago. Since finishing uni, work has taken over a lot so we can’t do as much original content as we’d like! But i guess the way we work as team is Kieran is the ideas man and gets everything planned in and organised. I’m not too great at that stuff, and then I just shoot it! We always tend to think along the same lines, I guess thats half the reason we work so well together. Kieran does a lot on the digital marketing and social media side of things, so when offering a service to a client, we can offer up a variety of skills. For example, we would consult, come up with ideas, Implement them and then push the content out to get the maximum exposure for it.

Do you have any advice for budding photographers?

Shoot what you like to shoot. Don’t try and copy what someone else is doing. You’ll never enjoy it as much if you’re trying to be someone your not and won’t develop you’re own style.
